Description

M 22 (also known as NGC 6656) is an ellliptical globular cluster in the constellation Sagittarius, near the Galactic bulge region. It is the largest and brightest Messier globular cluster, because of its usual low altitude. It is one of the brightest globulars that is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M 22 has roughly 70,000 stars and is located 9,600 light years from earth. It was one of the first globulars discovered in 1665 by Abraham Ihle. It was included in Charles Messier catalg of comet-like objects on June 5, 1764.
