Description

DETAILS: Imaged in December, 2004 with the 12.5" Truss RC on an ME Robotic German Equatorial Mount using an ST-10XME SBIG camera at f9, employing Tru-Balance LRGB filters, and guided by an AO-7 Adaptive Optics Device. Two hours of unbinned Luminance combined with 30 minutes each of RGB color using RegiStar, MaxIm Dl, Photoshop CS and various plug-ins. CCDSharp applied to the Luminance.

COMMENTARY: M97, the Owl Nebula, is a planetary nebula in the Constellation Ursa Major at an approximate distance of 1,630 light-years. It is a complex planetary exhibiting a cylindrical torus shelll viewed in the oblique, the eyes of the Owl being made up of matter poor regions at the ends of the cylinder. At the center is a 16 magnitude star of 0.7 solar masses. Many faint background galaxies surround the nebula, most notably the one on which a brighter star is superimposed.
