Description

This object is an emission nebula located about 20,000 light years away in the constellation of Canis Major. It lies just east of the brightest star in the sky, Sirius. Not much has been written about this seldom imaged object, also know as Gum 5, and it only has a few Astrobin entries.

This nebula is a small but fairly bright object, 9 minutes in diameter. I like the intricate dark dust lanes and the small cloud pillars of the nebula .

Like most narrowband objects, hydrogen has the strongest presence in this nebula, followed by oxygen. This nebula resembles a teapot to me - note the stream of stars depicting the steam rising up and out of the teapot spout on the right. Also note the faint swirling extent of the nebula towards the bottom of the image.
