Description

NGC 5897 is a globular cluster, 135 light years in diameter, located 40,000 light years away in the constellation of Libra. Although this cluster is fairly large, it does not show up very well in my image. I was about to throw out this image set when I checked the few other Astrobin images done of this object, including submissions by my colleagues Kurt and Lawrence. All of the other images are also relatively dim.

After further investigation, I found that this cluster has an unsually high Shapley–Sawyer Concentration Class Index. It is classified as 11 out of 12, which means that it has a very low star density in its center. As a result, and also because this cluster is low in the southern sky for many of us, this object is not an easy cluster to image well.
