Description

The Tiger's Eye Galaxy, (NGC 2841, PGC 26512, UGC 4966), in Ursa Major, is fairly bright, at magnitude 9.2, and fairly large, at 6' 20" x 2' 51". I am not sure why Charles Messier missed, or chose not to record this one, or why Sir Patrick Moore left it off his Caldwell list.

NGC 2841 is an inclined unbarred spiral galaxy, exhibiting a prominent inner ring structure. It was discovered on 9 March 1788 by William Herschel. It is approximately 46 million light years away.

NGC 2841 is a giant spiral galaxy with properties similar to those of the Andromeda Galaxy.. It is a prototypical flocculent spiral galaxy, a type of spiral galaxy whose arms are patchy and discontinuous.

It is home to a large population of young blue stars, and few H II regions.
