Description

My first image in almost 4 months (going though home remodeling. . . Oy Vey!) is not eye candy, but I think interesting. It’s supernova SN 2018zd in galaxy NGC 2146. The supernova, now shining at magnitude 14-14.5 (see nearby reference star), was discovered on March 2 (15 days before this picture was taken) and, like its host galaxy is approximately 70,000,000 light years away….. The breakout at lower left is at original scale, while the background is the original wide field image reduced to 37% of its original size….. The image is far from my best as my flat field generator went on the fritz, requiring me to create and use a sub-par “PC monitor/ tee shirt” flat (see gradient at top right), and seeing was poor (turbulent sky) the night the image was taken.
