Description

The Horse-head and Flame nebula are approximately 1500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Orion. The iconic deep-sky object is formed by the sharp outline of a dark dust cloud, with a remarkable likeness to a head of a horse, silhouetted against a brightly glowing patch of ionized hydrogen that is being energized by the strong ultraviolet radiation from nearby Sigma Orionis. This cosmic scene is my favorite of all as I've been aware of its beauty since my childhood. It was a surprising recognition when I was getting to know astrophotography that it could be captured by amateur instruments as well.
