Description

A combination emission-reflection nebula [IC 5146, a.k.a. The Cocoon Nebula] and a fine example of a dark nebula [Barnard 168] are seen in this wide field exposure of an east Cygnus star field. Astronomers believe that the Cocoon Nebula is an area of active star formation which is populated by young stars, perhaps less than 100,000 years old. The Cocoon Nebula and its associated dark nebula, Barnard 168, are believed to be about 4,000 light years distant.

This is an RGB image with 5 x 360 second exposures for each of the color channels.
