Description

The ghostly Leo I dwarf spheroidal galaxy, just 20 arc minutes north of Regulus. I have seen it a few times visually by moving the scope back and forth to detect the hazy patch using fairly high magnification. Really tricky. It was pretty easy work with this stack of 100 2.5 second exposures. Despite being 820 thousand light years away, it easily resolved into stars like a distant giant globular cluster. The seeing was terrible, so the star images are a lot softer than I had hoped. Noticeably blue overall. Here, I am using a focal reducer to expand the field of view to 15 arc minutes wide or so. There is some star distortion at the corners because I have not be able to use the focal reducer and my coma corrector simultaneously because they simply won't fit in the space I have within the T-adapter and the coma corrector. Need to try this again with better seeing and the coma corrector!

It’s left uncropped, showing darkness on a couple borders just as it looked live in SharpCap after a few minutes of live stacking. An effect of star alignment and image rotation typical of altaz mounts.
