Description

This object is a globular star cluster located 20,000 light-years away in the southern constellation of Corona Australis (the Southern Crown). Containing about 150,000 stars, it appears as a nice cluster to me despite its -43 degree declination and low altitude from my backyard site. Southern hemisphere observers will have a much more interesting view of it.

The cluster spans about half of the width of our full moon. The stars of the cluster are easily resolved except within the central core. Many brightly colored blue and orange stars surround the core, with such density that they appear to me to be part of the cluster and not just part of the background sky. The core is very bright and dense.
