Description

Rho Ophiuchi is the namesake of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex. It is a primarily reflection nebula of gas and dust, which the Rho Ophiuchi system is embedded in. It is one of the easiest star forming regions to observe, as it is one of the nearest at 360 light-years (110 parsecs) away, and it is visible from both hemispheres. The interstellar extinction of Rho Ophiuchi is measured to be 1.45 magnitudes, meaning the dust and gas in front of Rho Ophiuchi absorbs light from the system, making it appear 1.45 magnitudes dimmer than it should be. The red cloud area in the upper left is associated with the Antares Nebula, which blends into the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud.

This image was captured with an ASI1600MM-C camera on a TS80 APO running at f5.5. The image consists of LRGB channels made up of 75x30 sec sub exposures for each channel, so 37.5 minutes per channel, or 150 min in total. The Lumininance layer was overlayed at reduced opacity to boost contrast.

At full screen size there it does demonstrate some graininess in parts of the cloud, and this will require more data to resolve. So I will revisit this location again.
