Description

This object is a part of the Vela supernova remnant, located 800 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela. It is estimated that the supernova exploded approximately 12,000 years ago. The Vela supernova remnant overlaps the Gum supernova remnant, and the two are among the largest and brightest features in the X-ray sky. The Vela SNR is one of the closest supernova remnants to earth. It is located low in the southern sky at -45 degrees declination. The field of view of the image is 2 degrees wide.

The region captured in this image has been named the Highway and the Spur. The Highway is the horizontal section of filaments in the center of the image. The Spur is the thin thread-line filament line toward the bottom of the image. Small brights arcs and larger dim arcs are scattered throughout the image. The spatial distribution of the Ha and OIII fronts help to make the image more interesting. Overall, I find the pattern of supernova remnant filaments that fill this section of the sky to be fascinating.
