Description

This object is an emission nebula located 14,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Puppis. The nebula consists of huge clouds of gas and dust sprinkled with bright stars and star clusters. This narrowband image is primarily red due to the strong presence of hydrogen in the nebula.

Haffner 19 is the open star cluster surrounded by red hydrogen gas, located just below the center of the image. Haffner 18 is the larger cluster of about 50 stars at the center of the image. Just above and to the left of center, a young star can be seen still surrounded by its small birth cocoon of reddish gas. Throughout the nebula are dark lanes of dust which are believed to be feeding the process of forming new stars.

In the foreground of the image are many brightly colored stars, including a beautiful Z-shaped blue cluster located near the right edge of the image, just below center.
