M101 (NGC 5457 ou galaxie du Moulinet), est une galaxie spirale, vue de face, située dans la Grande Ourse à une distante d'environ 7 Mpc (∼22,8 millions d'a.l.). Son diamètre de 170 000 années-lumière est 70 % plus grand que celui de la Voie lactée (100 000 années-lumière) pour une masse stellaire de l'ordre de 1 000 milliards de masses solaires, environ dix fois la masse de notre galaxie.
