Description

This object is an open star cluster located 10,000 light years away in the constellation of Gemini. I find it to be one of the prettier open clusters, with a nice mix of bright blue and orange stars throughout the image. Overall, this cluster contains about 1,000 stars across a span of about 30 light years. Interestingly, the very center of the cluster appears to be devoid of stars.

An unusual aspect of this cluster is that it is lies about 3,000 light years above our Milky Way galactic disk, but it is rich in chemical elements. Clusters which are chemically rich are usually only found right in the galactic disk. Scientists don't understand how this cluster ended up in this location, based on current models.

To the upper right of the cluster, at 2 o'clock one-third of the way to the image edge, is a faint pair of interacting background galaxies (PGC021441 and PGC021435), about 400 million light years away.
