Description

This object is a globular cluster located 60,000 light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. This is a dim cluster - there are over 100 other Milky Way globular clusters more luminous than this one. The stars appear fairly resolved to me across most of the cluster.

This cluster, located far above the Milky Way galactic plane, is relatively isolated from other globular clusters in the galaxy. Its distance from the Milky Way core suggests that it could have been a former member of one of the nearby Sagittarious dwarf galaxies.

Researchers have found that the inner section of this cluster is bluer than the outer section, perhaps because of a lack of red giants in the core area. The image shows this effect. Scientists also say that detailed images show that this cluster has S-shaped tidal arms, but I do not see that clearly in this image. A faint galaxy (PGC 38748) is visible in the lower left of the image.
