Description

Used a planetary imaging approach with a planetary nebula! The large 16" aperture permitted using very short (0.125 second) exposures and then setting SharpCap to rejecting images where stars were too large. They need to allow subframe exposure times of less than a second on Astrobin! I had to enter 1 second instead of 0.125 seconds.

I set the star side to less than 4 pixels FWHM and rejected probably 1/3 of the images captured, in the end stacking nearly 1200 frames. The background is a bit grainy because I didn't want to lose the smudges at the edge of the nebula at 9, 10, 11, 2 and 4 o'clock positions around the nebula.

I am seeing a few brighter stars with slight fans, so I will try this again to see if I can improve it even further. A dark site might help some too with everything, including the sky grain.

Update: recaptured under similiar seeing and frame filtering conditions, but using 1 second exposures and stacking until I had 30 minutes of data. Background was much less noisy, permitting simpler post processing and also showing an additional couple of very faint stars near the center of the nebula. I'll try this again with more fine tuning next time seeing is good and I have a moonless night again.
