Description

Good afternoon everyone! Today's image of the day is a very well known and famous target known as The Orion Nebula, and is catalogued as Messier 42. In this image is also Demarin's Nebula, catalogued as Messier 43, which is the bottom left part of the Orion Nebula. To the left of Demarin's Nebula and the Orion Nebula is another nebula known as The running man nebula, which is catalogued as NGC 1977. These nebulae are clouds of gas, mostly hydrogen, that form and birth stars. The nebulae in the image, as well as several others in the Orion Constellation are all a part of the the Orion molecular cloud complex, which is a star forming HII region located about 1000-1400 light years away from earth. The Orion Molecular cloud complex actually consists of two parts, Orion A and B respectively. This star-forming region is one of the most active star forming regions near Earth, and is so visible that the center star in orion's sword to the naked eye is not actually a star at all, but in fact is the Orion Nebula itself. I hope you like today's image, as always, Clear Skies!
