Description

The Coma Star Cluster in Coma Berenices is a large, nearby, and conspicuous open star cluster. It was first catalogued by Ptolemy in 138 AD. Although conspicuous, the cluster was not included in the Messier or NGC catalogs. Its true nature as an open cluster was proven only in 1938.

The Coma Star Cluster is scattered over an area of 4.5 degrees and contains 40 stars from magnitude 4.3 to 10.5. They were identified as members by their common proper motion. The cluster’s distance was refined by the Hipparcos satellite, and is now estimated at 288 light-years. It’s age is estimated to be 400 million years.
