Description

NGC 4631 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It has a nearby companion, a dwarf elliptical galaxy, NGC 4627. It is believed the interaction between the two galaxies accounts for the slightly distorted shape of 4631, giving rise to its nickname the Whale Galaxy.
