Description

This is the second time I photograph this object, and this time with the Tamron pushed to 1200 mm to fully fill the field.

Located in the constellation Hydra, 1500 light years from our system, the Messier 48 open cluster extends widely about 23 light years, or 54 minutes of arc.

Its 80 members of young stars are estimated at 300 million years old.

When Charles Messier first observed this object and cataloged it on February 19, 1771, he was mistaken in calculating his coordinates, and so it was able to be "rediscovered", much later, by various astronomers. It was the same for M 47, observed in the same night, in the constellation of Puppis.
