Description

Well, there certainly aren't many contrast features in a full moon. Slewing around the limb I found the trio of Humboldt Crater (center), Hecataeus Crater (to the side), and Phillips Crater (foreground center) to have a little more visual interest than anywhere else. Humboldt is the more interesting one here (with more of a central range than a peak). The long shadows are cast back toward the rear rim. The floor has some significant rilles that are only barely visible from this steep angle. Humboldt is about 125 mi (200 km) in diameter so, in scale, each pixel across the crater represents a little less than 800 ft (244 m) on the moon. The image here is 3x drizzled.

This marks a "first light" image for my TPO 12" f/4 Imaging Newtonian...the first finished image anyway. In the eternal quest to do more with less, I settled on trying this thing out for planetary work. While it has the aperture, the mechanics of the scope certainly need constant supervision. I think I had things settled down after 4-5 days of trying (with bad seeing not helping matters). All in all, I think it did very well considering the price point. When doing these things, I have to remind myself not to get worked up over tinkering. This is a 12" aperture scope and may arguably be one of the most economical ways to get there. Aperture fever makes you do some silly things, but we'll still get to see how this pans out.

I'd put the seeing at close to 4 when I shot this but there was a lot of haze.
