Description

This object is an open cluster located 7,000 light years away in the northern constellation of Cygnus. The cluster is a beautiful mix of different color stars of varying brightness. The cluster spans about 20 light years and contains almost 1000 stars. It is difficult to tell where the outer edges of the cluster end and the rich field of background Milky Way stars begin.

The brightest orange stars outline an U-shaped area, with two prominent extensions upward in the image. The most interesting aspect of this cluster to me is the numerous dark areas in the core of the cluster. These could simply be areas with few stars, or perhaps dust regions blocking out the background starlight.
