This is M104, the famous Sombrero Galaxy, imaged at Deep Sky West. It is located in Virgo, about 31.1 Mly distance. Its apparent magnitude is 8.0, considered to be the brightest galaxy within a 10 Mpc radius from our galaxy. It has a diameter of 50 kly, which is about 30% the size of the Milky Way. It is characterized as a spiral galaxy with an unusually large and bright halo as well as a prominent dust lane as seen in my image.

I found this data to be challenging to work with given the high dynamic range of the galaxy. It is quite bright, and processing it with the goal of bringing out some of its detail as well as showing detail of the surrounding region was difficult. As this is a dark site, the exposure time was 20 min for each filter. With my suburban backyard imaging I have been settling on shorter exposures in order to combat light pollution as well as to not overly saturate stars. This makes for contrasting processing steps between the data sets I have been working with.

Lloyd from DSW made three separate luminance images in order to bring out more detail from this data in the galaxy that he then combined into a final luminance. That's an intriguing process that I may try on a later revision.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
