Description

NGC 5139 imaged during two nights in may 2018 at Athos Centro Astronómico, La Palma. The globular cluster (or possible dwarf galaxy remnant) culminated in only 18° altitude but due to the great transparency only two hours of exposure even showed the surrounding nebulae...which made postprocessing in pixinsight quite intricate because it was difficult to tell where there was nebula and where not. In the small preview of revision B (larger FOV) you can see a dark, irregular zone around the object. Again I was not sure whether there simply is less or no dust nebula in front of the cluster or the dark area was a possible artifact caused by background extraction. So I tried different settings, also sparing the clusters "direct neighborhood", but the dark zone remained which brought me to the conclusion that indeed there seems to be a "window" in the galactic dust. I intentionally did not resolve the core as far as the material would have allowed me to. The idea was to give an impression of the object's extreme dynamic range; while the center is easily visible as a "nebulous" star, the brightness strongly fades at the edges.
