Description

This object is an open star cluster located 3000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus. It consists of about 250 stars scattered across a circular area about half the size of the full moon.

It is categorized as a Trumpler type III 1 r cluster, which means that it is a rich, fairly loose collection of equally bright stars. It has been described in various ways, including "Hole in a Cluster", "Smoke Ring" and "Star Clover". To me, a more appropriate description would be "The Dark Cross", since I see a dark area roughly in the shape of a "+" at the center of the object.

All of the cluster stars are fairly dim, so whatever you want to call it, it is not a spectacular cluster in my book. The bright nearby collection of stars, partially seen at the bottom of the image, is a more obvious and attractive sight to me than NGC 6811, but I don't believe that it has a designation.
