Description

Sunday nights Astrospheric weather forecast predicted no Cloud Cover, and above average Transparency and Seeing with no Moon.  My latent werewolf urges were activated to respond to this rare phenomenon and go into the darkness to do some astronomical imaging.  Another strange planetary nebula was awaiting with photons available for reaping.

SH2-200 is a beautiful and mysterious planetary nebula located 3600 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. The bright portion of the nebula is only 6 minutes in diameter.  Some very old and highly evolved, low surface brightness planetary nebulae such as SH2-200 (or HDW 2 as it is also known) contain very hot and energetic central stars, which are the remnant cores of the progenitor star that died and ejected its outer gaseous layers. The energy output of some planetary nebula central stars is so prodigious that it is capable of ionizing unrelated gas in the surrounding vicinity causing it to glow.   (various Web sources)
