Description

NGC 6204 is an open cluster in the southern constellation Ara, close to the galactic equator. It was discovered on May 13, 1826 by James Dunlop. It is an 8.5 magnitude cluster of Trumpler type I2p situated in a rich Milky Way star field. Nearby is the cluster Hogg 22 consisting of four or five brighter stars.

Helen Sawyer Hogg was an astronomer noted for pioneering research into globular clusters and variable stars. She was the first female president of several astronomical organizations and a notable woman of science in a time when many universities would not award scientific degrees to women. Her scientific advocacy and journalism included astronomy columns in the Toronto Star and the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. She was considered a "great scientist and a gracious person" over a career of sixty years. She was an expert on variable stars in globular clusters and discovered many open star clusters in the southern Milky Way.

It was my pleasure to meet and to work with Dr. Hogg about 40 years ago

when I was doing variable star research for the AAVSO at the David Dunlop Observatory in Toronto. A very gracious lady indeed!
