Description

My first attempt at the Hubble Palette with the ASI 1600 MM-C. Capturing M16 and the beauty of the Pillars of Creation has been a long-time dream for me ever since I started with my astro-photography efforts. I'm quite pleased with this result, also considering the modest total integration time of 39 minutes under a very good sky in the mountains.

The so called "Hubble Palette" (which, as the name implies, was of course used first on images captured by the Hubble Space Telespcope) is a way to show how different gases and molecular clouds interact within a Nebula, and therefore such images are not only beautiful, they also tells you something very interesting about the chemical composition of what you're looking at: Hidrogen Alpha maps to Green, Oxigen to Blue, and Sulfur to Red. This kind of palette is created capturing each channel separately with a monochrome sensor using dedicated filters which let only the light emitted by ionized molecules of Ha, O3 and SII, and then combining in post-production the channels together in an artificial RGB image.
