Description

Hyginus and Triesnecker (craters and rimae) observed on the 6 April 2018 from Boronia, Melbourne.

If you like Rima (or Rilles) - you may have died and gone to Rima heaven.

Rima Hyginus and Rimae (plural) Triesnecker, located near the centre of the visible face of the moon (hence near Sinus Meddi; Bay of the Centre) are a stunning network of Rilles located just off the edge of Mare Vaporum (Sea of Vapors). Rima Hyginus has a 9-km-wide impact crater which impacted square on the Rima. Rima Hyginus was previousely known as the Hyginus Cleft - the term "Cleft" was used by English selenographers before the term Rima and Rille became common.

Near the Triesnecker crater is an extensive network of Rimae (I, II, III, V, VI and VII; for some reason Rima IV was not named) extending for over 200 kilometres. The width of the main Rilles are close to 2 kilometres. The multiple rilles that makes up the Rimae Triesnecker rille system intertwine to create the largest chain of valleys of the Moon - if they were placed end-to-end they would form a 1,000 km long channel. This feature is well known to lunar observers who are assessing the resolution of their observational equipment.
