Description

A grouping of three magnificent galaxies in one field of view.

NGC 3628 (left) - aka Hamburger Galaxy.

M66 (bottom right).

M65 (upper right).

Finally I got around to collecting the Blue channel data and adding more exposure data with the Luminence, Red, Green and Blue filters for this image of the Leo Triplet (located around 35 million light years away in the northern constellation of Leo).

NGC 3268 is seen edge-on, with thick dust lanes along the plane of the galaxy.

The disks of M65 and M66 are partly inclined to show their spiral structure.

These 3 galaxies are gravitationally interacting.

Luminance: 38x5mins, Bin1x1, G139, Temp -10, Exp. 3H10M

Red: 14x5mins, Bin2x2, G139, Temp -10, Exp. 1H10M

Green: 14x5mins, Bin2x2, G139, Temp -10, Exp. 1H10M

Blue: 14x5mins, Bin2x2, G139, Temp -10, Exp. 1H10M

Total exposure across all filters: 6 hours 40 minutes collected over 3 nights.

If you Google search ..... "astronomers do it in the dark Leo Triplet" ..... you will see a great image by Scott Rosen of the tidal tail of millions of stars being dragged out of the NGC 3628 galaxy by a close encounter with either M65 or M66.
