The Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8, NGC 6523) is a gigantic interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius, located about 5,200 light-years away from Earth and covers an area of space of about 140 by 60 light-years.
The Lagoon Nebula has this name because of the cloud of dust visible in the center of the image.
To the left of the cloud, we can see the open cluster NGC 6530, composed of several bright stars, which will have formed inside only a few million years ago.
A little to the right of the cloud appears the brightest star of the object, the 9 Sagittarii (of apparent magnitude 5.97 and spectral class O5), which is responsible for much of the brightness of the nebula.
The brighter region to its right is known as the Hourglass Nebula, and is a regional of intense star formation.
