Description

Another LRGB image from the city.

This bright spiral galaxy lies about 50 million light years away from us in the constellation Coma Berenices. From Earth, we view the spiral edge-on and due to this narrow shape, it’s commonly referred to as the Needle Galaxy. A dark dust lane crosses the central bulge of the galaxy.

Most of the exposure time was dedicated to luminance, so I had to use a lot of noise reduction on the color data.

I’ve annotated the stars with R1 magnitudes from the USNO-B1 catalog. The weakest stars in this image are around magnitude 18.
