Description

HOO = RGB rendition of the core of the Eta Carinae nebula.

The Hydrogen-alpha (Hα) filter I used for the red channel allows a 7nm-wide spectral window through to the cooled camera sensor, a narrow spectral window centred on the Hydrogen-alpha wavelength of 656.28nm (i.e. the wavelength of light emitted by hydrogen atoms when electrons are excited and fall from the third lowest to second lowest energy level). This rendition (whilst still a false colour image) is much closer to the true colour of the nebula since the 656.28nm wavelength of the dominant H-alpha (Hα) emission is at the red end of the visible electromagnetic spectrum. This version seems to provide the most detail, with a series of "small" (1-2 Light Year long) dark pillars known as Bok Globules (you can Google those!) easily resolved in the central-left of the image. Stars condense out of these denser gas/dust pillars.
