Description

This object is a dark nebula located in the constellation of Scutum. Not much has been written about this unusual object. It is commonly called the Fishhook Nebula, the Checkmark Nebula, and the "L" Nebula. None of these names quite describe the shape accurately in my opinion, although I am hard pressed to come up with a better descriptive name.

This nebula is considered to be a Bok Globule, which is the smallest example of a dark nebula (less than 3 light years across). Stars are forming in the dense dark cloud.

The surrounding abundant star field is part of the Scutum star cloud. The background has a brownish tint from the tremendous amount of dust in this part of the sky.
