In the constellation Crux or the Southern Cross, a case shines in a small portion of Milky Way. It is NGC 4755, the Kappa Crucis cluster that has been christened "Jewel Box" by John Herschell. Kappa Crucis is the orange star in the center of the cluster, it is a binary of 100,000 sun.

This open cluster was discovered by Louis de Lacaille in 1751-1752, during a stay in South Africa.

With an apparent magnitude of 4.2 and distant from Earth by about 6440 light-years, this cluster is observable from the southern hemisphere. With an apparent dimension of 10 minutes of arc, it is relatively young, only 7.1 million years old.

Dans la constellation de la Croix du Sud, un écrin brille dans cette petite portion de Voie Lactée. C'est NGC 4755, l'amas de Kappa Crucis qui a été baptisé "Jewel Box" (Boîte à bijoux) par John Herschell. Kappa Crucis est l'étoile orangée au centre le l'amas, c'est une binaire de 100 000 soleil.

Cet amas ouvert fut découvert par Louis de Lacaille en 1751-1752, lors d'un séjour en Afrique du Sud.

D'une magnitude apparente de 4,2 et distant de la Terre d'environ 6440 années-lumière, cet amas est observable depuis l'hémisphère Sud. D'une dimension apparente de 10 minutes d'arc, Il est relativement jeune, seulement 7,1 millions d'années.
