Description

Abell 31 is an interesting ancient asymmetrical planetary nebula in Cancer. Its shape is caused by interaction with the interstellar medium, as it is moving through space at high speed. The PN was discovered in 1955 by George Abell on the POSS plates. It is very faint, at a surface brightness of Mag 26,9 per sq. arcsec. and I found this one was an absolute killer of a challenge.
