Description

This object is a group of galaxies located in the constellation of Virgo. The largest galaxy is the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 5846 just below the center of the image, located over 100 million light years away. The smaller galaxy NGC 5846A is immediately to the left of this galaxy. The two galaxies are not believed to be interacting.

Although NGC 5846 is brighter and more massive, the spiral galaxy NGC 5850 towards the top of the image has a much more interesting structure. It is labelled a barred galaxy, although its bar is the most striking of any galaxy I have seen. It stretches over half of the distance across the galaxy. Scientists believe that this could have been the result of a past encounter with the elliptical galaxy. The bar is surrounded by a round ring of stars. Out of this ring spirals a long beautiful wide faint arm.

Finally, the small elliptical NGC 5845 just barely sneaks into the bottom center of the image.
