Description

This object is a cometary globule located 2000 light years away in the constellation of Centaurus.

Bok globules are small dark nebulae which contain dense dust and gas from which star formation likely takes place. Bok globules that are subject to radiation from a nearby star sometimes form tails of gas and dust. These types of Bok globules are called cometary globules (CG), due to their resemblance to a comet. The Bok globule in this image has a very unusual shape, pointed at each end.

The image includes CG12 and its associated blue reflection nebula, NGC 5367. This object is located over 500 light years above the plane of our galaxy, in a place where little gas and dust is normally found. The small galaxy seen just above the center of the image is PGC49788.
