Description

Most estimates agree that the Ring Nebula has been expanding for less than 2000 years. At its current rate, it expands at about one arc-second per century. The ring is a bipolar planetary nebula which is viewed about 30 degrees off-axis from Earth. This is gives us a slightly oblique view and an oval appearance. These emission nebula shells and central white dwarf are all that remain of a once-massive red giant star. This it probably the closest example of the ultimate fate of our sun.

This is a rework of a previous image. In fact, I took the processed LRGB final from two years ago and layered on the hydrogen alpha data captured this year to fill in the outer halo shells of the nebula. This is also my first image I can think of where I did final adjustments on a different screen, so we’ll see if I need to revisit it once I see it on my normal monitor.

Enjoy!
