Description

M57 Ring Nebula!
The Ring Nebula is what's known as a planetary nebula, but the term is a misnomer from back before we knew much about these kinds of objects (they looked a bit like planets in early telescopes). Planetary nebulae are main-sequence stars, much like our own Sun, that are in their death throes, ejecting their outer layers of gas and becoming white dwarfs. This one is about 2300 lightyears away in the constellation Lyra, which also contains the bright star Vega. It's a little less than 3 lightyears across, which is quite large considering how small it looks!

This image is the result of two experiments I conduced: one was seeing whether my Celestron AVX could handle my 8-inch SCT with a 76mm Borg refractor riding atop as a guide scope, and the second was conducting super-short exposure astrophotography with my new ZWO camera (as a result of being pressed for time). Both were ultimately successful!
