Description

This object is a globular star cluster located 10,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is the brightest globular star cluster in the entire Messier catalog. Its beauty is augmented by its location in the constellation Sagittarius, near the center of the Milky Way, with one of the densest star backgrounds in the entire sky.

M22 consists of over 70,000 individual stars and is one of the closest globular star clusters to Earth. Since it is low in the southern sky at -24 degrees declination, observers in the northern United States will have difficulty seeing this magnificent object clearly. I am surprised that so many stars in the outer region of the cluster are clearly resolved.
