My second attempt at shooting the Veil nebula. Was actually able to target correctly this time ;) Will say that I'm coming around to the stacking methods. While this image was not processed through it, I've began playing with Pixinsight. Details: result of 3 480 second, f/8, ISO800 exposures and 3 180 second, f/5.6, ISO1600 exposures stacked through DeepSkyStacker, then stacked in Photoshop, leveled and curved, then Lightroom for some additional touches. My biggest issue at the moment shooting through a camera lens is the amount of vignetting. While I'm shooting with a 70-200 f/2.8, it's useless at anything below f/5.6, especially for field flatness. This particular night seemed far worse than previous nights. But, DeepSkyStacker does do a very good job of removing the majority of the problem when combined with flats. All stacking was done with 10 darks, 20 flats and 20 bias files per f stop/ISO combo.

As a side note, my previous image was done with 10 minute exposures. I must have nailed the polar alignment that night. This night in particular I did far more fumbling than I did capturing. The first time I aligned, I forgot to lock down the tripod center column, so ended up chasing issues until I realized it. But even then, I was having a hard time getting 5 minute keepers. I wanted to shoot the Veil as well as Andromeda this evening, so I split my time between the two. Turns out I should have focused on just one and walked away with better data on one subject than poor for two. Note to self, next time a weeks worth of poor skies is coming up, focus on one thing.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
