Description

Was fortunate to make it out here again a few weeks ago during the most beautiful weather of the year. It was a quick jaunt with my family in tow and a 4 hour drive home still ahead of me, so I could not stay very long. I did however play it smart this time and just left my camera and tripod alone as the intervalometer fired off shots. This made stacking much easier and the results are much better than from my first time shooting from the beach back in April.

The sight of Mars rising over calm lake was a sight to behold. Gone were the ice shoves that were present back in April, and the chill of air that was still in the 20s at that time. Now the air was warm and damp from humidity and impending fog rolling in from the east. Mosquitoes were bad back in the wooded parking lot and picnic area, but not so much at the beach. The sky was studded with summer's celestial gems and it was very dark, as it should be. Newport State Park is Wisconsin's first and only IDA Dark Sky Park. The beach was teeming with photographers trying to frame that perfect nightscape shot, and visitors just coming out to see what the night sky SHOULD look like. I even had the opportunity to do a little outreach and point out planets and constellations. My family even got to see what I was raving about since the last time I visited and they were wowed by the sights they saw. We even caught a few meteors! It was a perfect ending to a perfect day up in "The Door".
