Description

This object consists of two dark nebulae (B142 and B143) located 2000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila, about the apparent size of twice the diameter of our full moon. For obvious reasons, its nickname is Barnard's E Nebula. Its beauty is in its simplicity - just a few dark dust lanes in front of a dense star background.

Looking carefully, it is interesting to me how the dust extends and thins towards the bottom of the image. The "E" looks like the top of several dust columns which have been shaped by interstellar winds. Wider field of view images show that dust extends throughout the area, but is most concentrated in the "E".

The blue star colors throughout the image have been dimmed by the extensive dust field.
