NGC 6397 - Ara Globular Cluster

NGC 6397 (Caldwell 86) is a very interesting globular cluster located in the constellation of Ara. It is therefore observable only from the southern hemisphere.

At 7200 light-years from Earth, NGC 6397 is the second cluster nearest to us, after M 4, in the Scorpius constellation.

In addition, NGC 6397 is part of the 20 globular clusters of our galaxy, the Milky Way, whose nucleus collapsed and contracted into a very dense stellar agglomeration. This particular characteristic makes this cluster the one closest to the Earth, M 4 having no concentration of stars at its center.

Of an apparent magnitude of 6.68 and over a 30 arc minutes, NGC 6397 has been the subject of several astronomical scientific studies, one of which was to estimate the age of our galaxy. Thus, 13.6 billion years were obtained, almost corresponding to the age of the universe.

A 7200 années-lumière de la Terre, NGC 6397 est le deuxième amas globulaire le plus proche de nous, après M 4, dans la constellation du Scorpion.

Par ailleurs, NGC 6397 fait partie de la vingtaine d'amas globulaires de notre galaxie, la Voie Lactée, dont le noyau s'est effondré et contracté en une agglomération stellaire très dense. Cette caractéristique particulière fait de cet amas celui qui est le plus proche de la Terre, M 4 n'ayant pas de concentration d'étoiles en son centre.

D'une magnitude apparente de 6,68 et sur une étendue de 30 minutes d'arc, NGC 6397 a fait l'objet de plusieurs études scientifiques astronomiques dont l'une était d'estimer l'âge de notre galaxie. C'est ainsi que 13,6 milliards d'années furent obtenues, correspondant presque à l'âge de l'univers.
