Description

The Cocoon Nebula, IC5146, is an emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Cygnus and lies some 3300 light years away. The central star that lights the reflection nebula was formed roughly 100000 years ago. The Cocoon is an area of active star formation in the emission nebula.

The nebula is further surrounded by a dark nebula, Barnard 168, which appears as a dark lane extending away from the Cocoon.
