Description

This object is a subtly beautiful, tiny (40 second), dim planetary nebula located 5000 years away in the constellation of Cygnus. The beauty of the nebula is accentuated by the rich starfield background.

The nebula consists of four interesting regions - 1) an inner section which is irregular and contains sections of dust, hydrogen and oxygen of varying brightnesses, 2) a bright white torus-like central ring, 3) an outer extension from the ring of a thin band of hydrogen, which creates a reddish cast to the nebula, and 4) a very faint, strange section of HII which extends up and to the left of the nebula. This last section is so dim that it is not seen in the final image. I attached an Ha -only image which clearly shows this emission region.

The bluish central star is barely visible in the image at a magnitude of 18. A foreground star of magnitude 14 is visible above and to the left of the center.

This object has two nicknames. One is the Diamond Ring Nebula, but it doesn't really look like a diamond ring to me because of the location of the "diamond" on the inside of the ring. So I went with the other nickname, the Little Ring Nebula, which I think is more appropriate. The diameter of this ring is about half of the size of the famous Ring Nebula.
