Description

This object is a globular cluster located 20,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Sagittarius. Perhaps because it is hidden in the shadow of the supergiant magnitude 5.0 star Nu2 Sagittarii, this is the first Astrobin entry for this small but pretty cluster.

The cluster consists of mostly bluish stars, with one bright yellow outlier just below the center of the cluster. The cluster is also called Palomar 9, as one of the 15 faint Palomar globular clusters discovered in the 1950’s using photographic plates from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). This cluster is the brightest of all of the Palomar clusters.

The tiny star clump slightly above and to the right of the cluster center has the separate designation of IC 4802.
