Description

The Lagoon Nebula is pretty low on the southern horizon from my imaging location and, in the past, I have been hesitant to try to image targets that are only 30 degrees (or less) above the horizon. But in July and August, I decided to give this target a try. This image is based on 20 subs in each of the SHO filters; unbinned at 600 seconds. The processing used an alternate color mapping that PixInsights suggests instead of the standard Hubble pallet mapping. This results in the strong Ha signal contributing to the red channel. The focal reducer (APM Telescopes) brings my 130mm APO down to f/4.5. This allowed the large Lagoon Nebula to fit on my QSI683 chip.

In the original, the center of M8 was over exposed. I decided to experiment with the PixInsight procedure, HDRMultiscaleTransform, to suppress the brightness and enhance the detail in the nebulosity. I also used a star mask and MultiscaleMedianTransform to reduce the size of the brightest stars.
